The Podium
Behind Every Candidate...
The Cranley Team: Dynamic Duos Abound

By Graves Spindler

At the Cranley Campaigns Headquarters, we serve two masters, two Cranleys, two Candidates. Everyone knows John Cranley. He’s been a very visible member of Cincinnati City government since his appointment to council in 2000 and subsequent reelections. What some people don’t know, but will soon find out if we do our jobs, is that his mother, Susan, is a newly endorsed Democratic candidate for the Cincinnati School Board. Susan has been a dedicated public educator for the past 17 years, in addition to her roles as a wife and a mother to two sons. She has also been an active member of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, serving as a precinct executive for the past 5 years. We in the campaign think that she will bring a breath of fresh air and a new tone of frank and honest dialogue to the School Board. Now, on to the good stuff…us.

Speaking on running two campaigns for a mother and son, Allison Glatfelter, the campaigns’ manager remarked, “It’s hard. It’s hard work. We’re working on Saturdays. We’re coming in on Sundays. It’s just hard.” But enough paraphrasing a la our President’s portrayal on Saturday Night Live, working on two campaigns has proved time and again to be an always interesting and challenging experience.

For instance, Susan and John each have their own personal and unique styles in interacting with the campaign and in communicating with the public. Susan, a new candidate, is finding her own style talking with people about problems in the schools and her experience and proposals to address these issues. On the other hand, John, who has a considerable amount of experience in campaigning, is clearly more seasoned in his approach to getting his message across. This is one of the few instances when a Mother can learn from her son.

With regard to the campaigns, we are constantly working “double time” to get the message out about our candidates. We plan to be at every church festival, every parade, and as many community council meetings as humanly possible to ensure that the voters of Cincinnati know who John and Susan are and know why they should vote for them. In addition to physical visibility, the campaigns are working on two newsletters to inform the public of the campaigns’ goals, issues, and upcoming events, and to give the people of Cincinnati a better look at who John and Susan are. So look for “The Cranley Chronicle” in you email inbox soon.

The campaigns are also always looking for volunteers, of any walk of life, to help out with all the work involved in not one, but two political campaigns. Interested persons can contact the campaigns’ office at (513) 241-1777 to talk about opportunities and openings.

The campaigns’ staff will be working non-stop over the next few months to connect with as many people as possible, to get the word out about our two candidates, and to raise awareness of the issues and problems at the heart of the upcoming election. Allison Glatfelter, Graves Spindler, and Joyce Kinley make up the Cranley Campaigns’ team. Our office is located at 1523 Madison Road. We hope that you’re taking the same interest in this election that we are, and we hope that you’re as excited as we are about taking the city in a new direction in 2006.
